REHEARSALS & AUDITIONS

The Civic Chorale typically prepares for three concerts during the season - Fall, Christmas, and Spring. Weekly rehearsals begin in late August and continue through the Spring concert in May with 1 month break for Christmas (note that all these dates are approximate).   Rehearsals take place every Thursday evening from 7:30 to 9:30 at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, 201 East Market Street (corner of Roan and Market Streets) in Johnson City.   An additional dress rehearsal is usually scheduled during the week of performances. All singers are expected to participate in a minimum number of rehearsals for each concert.  Although our membership consists entirely of volunteers and there is an air of fun and fellowship, our primary focus during rehearsal is preparation of the music with an intent to perform at our full potential.  Rehearsal tapes for each concert are provided to members upon request to aid individual preparation.

REHEARSAL

Auditions

Prospective members should contact the Conductor to schedule an appointment for audition. Auditions take about 10 to 15 minutes, and are comprised of three principal elements:

  1. The candidate sings his/her choice of Joy to the World, My Country 'Tis of Thee, Amazing Grace, or America the Beautiful.  This is an opportunity for the candidate to demonstrate diction, phrasing, general vocal production, etc.

  2. The prospective member does some sight reading. This is usually an English renaissance motet, since the voice parts are relatively equal in character, there is no language barrier, and there is rhythmic independence of parts. All four parts are played on the piano while the candidate sings his/her own part. To qualify for membership, sight reading does not have to be perfect. However, the candidate should at least demonstrate ability to follow the basic sense of the rhythmic and melodic shape of the part being sung.

  3. The prospective member is given some simple vocal exercises to sing. These are used to check the high and low pitch ranges of the voice, dynamic range and control, control of vibrato, and tonal memory.
